Description

This complete Ocean Animals unit is the perfect way to teach your primary students about ocean animals!

This Informational Text unit is organized into 5 topics: jellyfish, seahorses, octopuses, starfish, and puffer fish.

There are 3 informational text articles provided for each topic (15 articles total). These articles can be used as individual close reading texts or can be put together to make a complete book. High quality photographs engage students and enhance their learning. These articles provide detailed information in a simple, basic format.

Each article is focused on one essential question. The essential questions include:
-What is a jellyfish?
-What is a bloom?
-Are all jellyfish the same?
-What is a seahorse?
-What do seahorses eat?
-How does a seahorse move?
-What are octopuses?
-What does an octopus do if it is attacked by a predator?
-Where do octopuses make their homes?
-What are starfish?
-What are tube feet?
-Why do starfish have 2 stomachs?
-What are puffer fish?
-How are baby puffer fish born?
-What do puffer fish eat?

After each article you will find a page of 3 simple, explicit, text dependent questions. There is also 1 page that includes 2 writing prompts that ask students to summarize and synthesize their learning by evaluating both the photographs and the text.

These reading and writing tasks are designed to give young students complex information in a simple, student friendly format. These tasks may be achieved through shared reading and writing, small group activities, or individual student work. (Instructions are provided). This is an excellent way to expose developing readers and writers to rigorous tasks.

The articles make excellent close reading texts and are closely aligned to the kindergarten and first grade standards. While students may be able to read these texts independently, they were designed to be read with support (through shared reading experiences).
