What educators are saying

Worked just as predicted! May need to plan to leave soaps to dehydrate for a longer time period (over a week in my class) but all is great!

Description

In this lab, the students will prepare soap using Crisco shortening and sodium hydroxide by the process of saponification. The lab works well to finish off the organic chemistry unit on hydrolysis of esters and saponification reactions. This is a classroom tested activity for many years and the students have always enjoyed making their own soap. It is relatable to their everyday lives, making it engaging and interesting for the learners. This lab is also a great opportunity to have your students write a formal lab report. The document includes the following:

  • List of Materials
  • Detailed lab procedure
  • Safety precautions when making soap
  • Grading rubric
  • Exemplar lab report example
  • Answer key to lab questions
