What educators are saying

Great activity to go along with our nutrition unit in anatomy. I have opted to spend more time on this unit instead of just the digestive system, and this was a great resource!
Fun engaging activity. I successfully used it as part of an independent living unit in a special education classroom.

LOW PREP! All it takes besides this lesson plan is a few tubs of sugar and crisco, some sandwich baggies and some plastic spoons.

This unit includes:

1. A 116-Slide PowerPoint where I include pre-lesson slides on calories, carbohydrates, diabetes, and sugar, and colored pictures and food labels for the 15 food items. PRESENTATION HAS ALL NEW GRAPHICS AND BACKGROUNDS!

2. A 41-Slide Obesity Slideshow showing the obesity rates of each state!

3. A 14-Slide Portion Sizes PowerPoint showing the differences of portion sizes today compared to the 60's.

4. 27 pages of complete step-by-step teacher directions that suggest what to say and that match PowerPoint slides to walk you through the lesson.

5. "Sugar Experiment Worksheet"

5. A follow-up "Fat and Sugar Homework" assignment is included.

6. "Gain Muscle Brochure"

Day 1 is about obesity and maintaining a healthy weight. A PowerPoint presentation walks you through why so many people are overweight, information on poor nutrition habits, family genetics, what a calorie is, false diet advertising, healthy and weight. Students will use a formula to figure how many calories THEY should have each day to maintain their weight.

Day 2 is learning about carbohydrates and sugars. Students learn about "good" carbs like complex whole plant foods, and whole grains. Next, they compare whole grains with simple carbohydrates, like sugar. Students calculate how much sugar they are allowed to have per day according to their total calorie intake, and discuss Diabetes. There are optional videos as well.

Day 3: Experiment Day! Students rank how healthy they think products are in terms of "Saturated Fat" and "Sugar" from pictures on the PowerPoint show. Then they will pair up, get a product to measure either sugar or crisco in baggies, and then they walk around the room and fill in the correct teaspoons in everyone's product. Last, students will correct their answers and make some conclusions and fill in a lesson reflection.

THIS UNIT AND ALL ITS MATERIALS ARE INCLUDED IN MY FULL SEMESTER HEALTH CURRICULUM" and MY "MIDDLE/JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL HEALTH PROGRAM, AND IS ALSO PART OF THE "NUTRITION UNIT."
