Number the Stars Modified Version

This modified version of the novel Number the Stars is an excellent way to teach students about human rights while incorporating in some history of the Holocaust. Students have the modified version of the book, separated into chapters. After each ‘chapter’ there are comprehension questions. The majority of the questions have sentence starters to help guide student answers. The packet begins with a character map that includes an image for each important character. Each ‘chapter’, or page, includes at least one image to help students recall important characters and to clarify unfamiliar vocabulary. The assessment at the end makes for a complete bundle.

I find that using this modified version of the text allows for my Entering and Emerging ELLs to access the text at their level. They get the main idea of each chapter and the most important parts of the story. As they build vocabulary and practice comprehension they are understanding the story and able to participate in class discussions and activities with their native English speaking peers

I also had an opportunity to use this product with a student who has an IEP and is reading well below grade level and she loved it!
