Number Talk Student Prompts

Post these prompts for students to use during your daily number talks and math lessons. Helping students learn how to share their thinking in a productive manner is an important part of “Number Talks.” As teachers we must model appropriate ways to respond to other students’ strategies which are shared during class. Displaying sample prompts such as this helps students learn how to frame their questions and comments. Some of these prompts are suggested in Number Talks, Helping Children Build Mental Math and Computation Strategies by Math Solutions. I keep this poster displayed where my students complete their daily number talk.
