Looking for a way to challenge your higher achieving students with tasks that are open and causing crunchy eyebrows?
This resource is designed to challenge and promote problem solving skills and perseverance matched against STAGE 2 AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM (NSW) OUTCOMES. It could easily be used in STAGE 3 though; I have used the cards with my Year 5 students and they were still challenged! After explicit teaching of addition and subtraction strategies, this resource would be perfect for applying these skills in a problem solving, open manner. From there, you can use the assessment task and rubric to ascertain whether students can successfully use mental and written strategies to complete addition and subtraction calculations.
The task cards can be used in a multitude of ways; individually, in maths centres/small group rotations, in pairs or even as an early finisher task at a later stage after completion of an addition/subtraction unit to revise skills.
