Note Value and Time Signature Music Quiz, Test, or Worksheet

Quiz or worksheet to assess understanding of note values and time signatures.

The quiz/worksheet is designed to assess both rote knowledge of note value and time signature definitions AND the application of that knowledge in reading and writing music. The quiz/worksheet is also designed to be easy to grade as only the final question requires teacher concentration to grade.

The assessment quickly clarifies for the teacher any area of these two connected subjects that may need to be reinforced for individual students or for the whole class.

Question 1 begins with students identifying notes and rests by name and duration.
Question 2 and 3 have students complete measures using the appropriate note or rest. They have to read the time signature correctly and use the notes and rests they just identified in order to fill in the measure with the correct note.
Question 4 has the students write the definition of each part of the time signature.
Question 5 and 6 ask students to find the measure(s) in the examples that have too many or too few beats. Students read the time signature and add note values in the measures to find which measure they need to circle.
Question 7 has students create a time signature and fill in each measure with the correct number of beats.
