Learning Objective
Using signal words or other clues from the text, students will read five nonfiction passages related to Presidents Day and identify the text structure used by the author.
Description
This engaging activity puts a fun spin on reviewing nonfiction text structures! Students are given three worksheets with five nonfiction passages related to our presidents. They must read the passage and identify the text structure that was used by the author of the passage. After the worksheets have been checked, students cut out the passages and use them as they assemble their craftivity. When finished, these can be used for a fun Presidents Day bulletin board or school hallway display! It can even be used as a valuable addition to your students' interactive notebooks!
PRINTABLE CRAFTIVITY VERSION: Students begin by reading the five passages and determining the text structure of each passage:
→ Sequence
→ Compare and Contrast
→ Cause and Effect
→ Problem and Solution
→ Description
Students will then color and cut out the pieces and glue them to construction paper. Student-friendly directions are provided.
NOTE!** This project can be completed at any time of the year! I first designed the craftivity to do with my own students in February around the time of President's Day. However, I know that this might not work in all classrooms. Therefore, at the end of the product, there is an alternate title box provided for teachers who opt to do this project in a month other than February.
TPT DIGITAL EASEL VERSION: This is a paperless version that can be completed on a device. The 12 slides contain five reading passages. Students read each passage and identify the text structure. With this format, I also added a second question asking students to explain how they chose the answer. Students type their answers into text boxes.
