Non-Fiction Text Features Assessment

I created these informal assessment cards because I wanted a quick way to gauge how my lesson went after I taught and/or reviewed the different types of Non-Fiction Text Features.

The questions on the cards rotate between Table of Contents, Index, Headings, Photograph, Glossary, Keywords, Captions, Diagram, Labels, Maps, Charts, and Graphs. The first set of cards show a picture and has 3 multiple choice options. The second set of cards has the written definition with 3 multiple options. The last set of cards has the picture with no options. When I printed this, I selected 2 to a page, and then hole-punched them in the corner. I hung them on a ring, which allowed me to flip through different questions as students came up to check out their books.

It went pretty smoothly, and allowed me to “spot check” and reteach students as needed. I brought them out one a month after I taught the lesson, just to keep practicing this skill, and also kept a set in my “library game” center.
