Description
Whether within English class or specific subjects such as Social Studies and Science, many of my middle and high school students with language-based learning disorders demonstrate difficulty reading and learning from non-fiction texts.
Although they are able to decode the text, they demonstrate difficulty comprehending what they have read and recalling specific information and vocabulary from the text. Additionally, oftentimes non-fiction text has specific structures not found in fiction text, which makes it more challenging to interact with.
Thus, I have created this versatile no-prep, print-and-go guided reading companion for any non-fiction text that students can use before reading, while reading, and when they have finished reading to guide their understanding of the text, while developing self-monitoring skills such as asking themselves, “what did I just read?” “what did I learn from this?” needed for independent work in school.
When used in conjunction with learning materials from their classroom for the ultimate contextualized language learning experience, this companion is perfect for enhancing my middle and high school students' non-fiction text comprehension, comprehension of text elements, vocabulary knowledge, and meta-cognitive thinking skills within meaningful, language-rich contexts!
This resource provides:
- Glossary of text elements and vocabulary frequently encountered within non-fiction text
- Pre-Reading Guide focusing on activating prior knowledge and predicting
- Reading Guide focusing on inferencing and self-monitoring of text and vocabulary comprehension
- Post-Reading Guide to review and check inferences and predictions with knowledge gained
- Guided Self-Reflection questions focusing on developing opinions of written text and facilitating an understanding content and main ideas, as well as text structures and vocabulary
