Description

Are you looking for an engaging way to start class? Have you noticed that students are obsessed with YouTube? This “alternative bell ringer” activity is a no-prep, student-centered activity that has your students doing all the work!

This assignment has students sift through YouTube to find a video that relates their science class to the real world. They select the video and sign up for a presentation slot, which happen at the beginning of a class for a given amount of days, weeks, or months!

This resource comes with a sample video (about chemical warfare) and presentation that you can use to model the assignment for your students. The class watches each video together, and then the presenter leads the class through a series of questions to check in on what was just viewed.

This assignment can be used for ANY SCIENCE CLASS!

Here’s how some teachers have used this activity:

  • To connect chemistry classes to the real world (topics have included things like fusion in stars, electric cars, triple point reactions, chemistry of glass blowing…the list goes on!)
  • To explore interesting adaptations in an evolution unit (SO many mind-blowing options!)
  • To dive into technologies that tackle climate change
  • In a totally open-ended way…ANYTHING in science that will wow the class!

This bell ringer option is a super engaging way to get everyone exploring science media to find something that interests them.

It’s a great way to have students present early in the year in a low-pressure way - they only have to give a quick introduction before showing the video and then asking the follow-up questions they have prepared!

It can be used to supplement any science curriculum across many grade levels.

This “Alternative Bell Ringer” Science Assignment includes:

  • Teacher Guide
  • Assignment Outline to be handed out or posted online (.ppt format; editable)
  • Grading Option #1: 4-Level Rubric (.ppt; editable)
  • Grading Option #2: Marking Scheme out of 40 points (.ppt, editable)
  • Sample presentation that includes introduction and follow-up questions (.pdf, non-editable)
  • Sign-up sheet

I use this activity early in the year and do 2-3 presentations per week. It’s a nice alternative to classic warm-up activities.

The best part? Your students will be excited to learn about a wide variety of science topics and won’t even realize that they’re learning!

TEACHERS HAVE SAID…

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️This was a great resource.  It was all set and ready to go.  It was easy to adapt and didn't require any real changes from me.  It let students feel "ownership" of some of what we do in class.  thank you!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️I LOVED this resource! This assignment really pushed my students to think about how what we learn in class really applies to real-life. The students enjoyed doing this. I enjoyed watching their presentations. I don't think I'll go a semester without using this resource. Thank you so much!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️My students enjoyed this a lot! I figured since they spend so much time on YouTube, why not put it to good use?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️I like that I can use this for the different classes that I teach. I like the ideas of how to implement it as well. So student centered.
