Do you need simple activities to help your newcomer ELLs learn English vocabulary in a fun way? This set of materials includes print worksheets, games, and vocabulary books along with digital activities to introduce students to basic English vocabulary.

ELD Picture Dictionary

Pictures are a great way to help English Language Learners learn new vocabulary. The sections included are:

Alphabet

Phonics- short vowels, digraphs, long vowels

Themed- Colors, Food groups (dairy, meat & protein, fruits, vegetables), school, kitchen, bathroom, transportation, emotions

ESL Newcomer Vocabulary with Photos

Introduce students to English vocabulary. This set includes pictures, sentence frames, close passages, and matching activities.

Newcomer Phonics Lessons

Decodable books and practice activities designed for 3-5 and k-2 newcomers.
Versions with both clip art and photographs are included.

Digital Vocabulary Practice

Students read a basic vocabulary word and then find the matching picture. They also read a simple sentence and find the object. Students will need access to a Google account to complete the vocabulary practice.

Basic English Vocabulary Mini Books

Consider laminating a copy of the color version to put in your class library. Give a student their own version of the black and white version.

Differentiated Student Work Pages

There are two versions of student work pages, one where students trace the word and the other where the student writes in the missing word. This makes it possible to use this book with students of all ages.

Writing Pages with Sentence Frames

For each category, there are writing pages with sentence frames. There are two versions available. One with 4 picture boxes per page with writing lines and one with one picture and writing section.

Vocabulary File Folder Games

ELL students can practice Tier 1 vocabulary with these sorting sheets and file folder matching games. Students use the sorting sheets to cut out and glue items into the category you find them in. In the file folder matching game, students use sentence frames or vocabulary cards to practice oral language skills and match basic nouns and verbs with the room they are found in.
