What educators are saying

I paired this up with a flip book about the one word challenge. It was exactly what I needed to begin the New Years' activity with my students.
This was just a great resource for my students to have in class!! It really helped them to complete an activity in class. Thank you!

Description

Make reading fun and meaningful as you discuss setting New Year's Resolutions. With these paired passages, you and your students can read about two students who are working to improve themselves in the new year.

This weeklong unit will allow you to have whole group and small group activities for an entire week upon your return to school in the new year.

In this weeklong unit, you'll find:

  • Paired Passages about Students Setting New Year's Resolutions
  • Detailed Lesson Plans for Whole Group & Small Group Activities
  • Differentiated Small Group Activities to Allow Students to Practice Targeted Skill

I don't know about your students, but my kids always need practice explaining what the text explicitly says in order to support their conclusions. They also have difficulty describing the characters, setting, and problem of the story.

With this New Year's Resolution activity, your students will be able to practice both of those difficult skills.

Paired Passage Summaries:

  • New Beginnings: Chelsea is a bit disorganized and is always losing things. She's always grounded because her grades are low. In this passage, your students will hear about Chelsea's attempt at setting a New Year's Resolution to help improve this area.
  • One Challenge: Jackson is a bit forgetful. He hears his dad talking about a one word challenge instead of setting a New Year's Resolution. Rather than focusing on a big, lofty goal, he chooses one word to help him improve throughout the year.

Throughout the week, your students will work to answer the following open-ended questions:

✨ How would you describe Chelsea?

✨ How would you describe Jackson?

✨ Who do you think would relate to "The Stars Will Still Rise" more, Chelsea or Jackson?

✨ Do you believe New Year's Resolutions are helpful?
