New Year’s Ned is throwing his annual New Year’s Eve party. There will be a big fireworks show at midnight, but someone has stolen the special clock. Help New Year’s Ned find who took the clock, so everyone gets to the show on time!
To complete the mystery of the missing clock your students will work in small groups, use their detective notes, and solve language tasks to discover who took the clock.
Clue #1 (shades of meaning) – Words have different “shades.” Instead of saying something is ugly, you might say hideous! Sort the cards to the correct word group. Whoever has the most words is NOT the clock thief.
Clue #2 (digraphs) – Digraphs can be at the beginning or end of a word. Sort the words to the correct suspects. Whoever has the most words did NOT steal the clock.
Clue #3 (context clues) – Do you understand the stilly words? Read the story to figure out what the underlined words mean. Whoever has the wrong definition is NOT the culprit.
Clue #4 (fiction and nonfiction) – Read the story descriptions. Which stories are fiction? Which are nonfiction? Whoever has the correct answers did NOT take the clock.
Clue #5 (facts and opinions) – Learn all about New Year’s Day. Read the text. Each suspect has a detail from the text. Are they facts or opinions? Whoever has the opinion is NOT the clock thief.
