Description

Why lecture your students on the anatomy and physiology of a nephron when you can empower them to actively learn about the functional unit of our kidneys in a step-by-step, organized, engaging way? The best part? There's no prior teaching required! Just print, pass out, and facilitate learning as your students successfully walk step-by-step through this resource at their own rate.

This 7-page inquiry-based activity includes short reading blurbs on the nephron followed by higher-order questions. Your students will not be able to move to the next page without understanding the previous page, guaranteeing deeper understanding of the nephron.

This resource is available in both print and digital forms. The digital version is a version through Google Slides™ of the same resource with textboxes.

Page 1: Basics of the Nephron - Why are nephrons called the functional units of the kidneys? What is the purpose of a nephron? How many nephrons does each kidney hold? How effective are our nephrons?

Pages 2 & 3: Anatomy of a Nephron - What is each part of a nephron? Students will read about the major structures of a nephron while labeling a nephron. Once finished reading, they will answer 6 higher-order questions and complete a matching section to guarantee that they understand the anatomy of a nephron. Structures covered: renal artery, glomerulus, Bowman's capsule, proximal convoluted tubule, loop of Henle, distal convoluted tubule, renal vein, collecting duct

Pages 4 - 7: Physiology of Nephron - What are filtration, reabsorption, and secretion? Where does each process occur? What is similar between the processes? What is different between the processes? Why is each process important? What would happen if each process wasn't occurring?

The nephron is one of the more complicated concepts to grasp in Anatomy & Physiology... and our students will definitely need to learn about it in college-level Anatomy & Physiology courses. This resource takes the nephron to a level perfect for an 11th or 12th grade A&P student and allows them to digest this complicated structure one small concept at a time.

I highly recommend that you utilize the Nephron Doodle Notes in conjunction with this resource. Here's how I utilize them to span 2 days in my A&P course:

Day 1: Nephron Anatomy & Physiology Activity Pages 1 – 3; Nephron Doodle Notes (all but the Functions of a Nephron section); continue the Nephron Anatomy & Physiology Activity

Day 2: Finish the Nephron Anatomy & Physiology Activity; finish the Nephron Doodle Notes (Functions of a Nephron section)
