What educators are saying

This resource was excellent! The images with details to share with the class were so helpful. The video links and additional resources made planning for this simple. The students loved the mask and the art activity with tissue paper. Thank you!

Description

Ned Kelly – Australia’s Most Infamous Bushranger introduces students, Grades 3 - 6, to the “naughty boy of Australian history” with an engaging lesson and includes an art project based on Australian artist Sidney Nolan’s famous Ned Kelly series.

The lesson tells the history of Kelly and contemplates the evolution of Kelly as a folk hero and integral character in Australian history. From his early troubles with the law to his iconic homemade armor and eventual capture, Ned Kelly’s story is an unforgettable and important addition to the history of the land down under. This lesson is filled with authentic images to enhance the learning experience.

Learning about cultures reinforces both SEL and global education programs by increasing social awareness, appreciation of diverse cultures and understanding about Our Cool World!

Students will also be introduced to Sidney Nolan, the Australian artist whose paintings told the story of Ned Kelly through art. Nolan was famous for painting the graphic image of Kelly and also for painting landscapes of Australia. Students will create their own “Sidney Nolan” Ned Kelly series landscapes with tissue and construction papers. An Australian Outback Idea Board and step-by-step instructions are provided along with Ned Kelly templates. Prep is minimal.

An optional, fun, no-prep Ned Kelly Armor Mask craft is also included!

Ned Kelly, Australia’s Most Infamous Bushranger (29 pages) includes a lesson plan, PowerPoint images, an art lesson, and a fun craft.

A fun and easy art project, Ned Kelly Australian Outback Landscapes, is presented for grades 3 - 6. An “Idea Board” is available to show students pictures of the Australian outback. Other supplies needed include white card stock or heavy weight copy paper, clear sheet protectors, tissue paper in a variety of colors, colored construction paper, white glue, glue stick, scissors, and pencils.

Supplies for an optional fun, no-prep craft, the Ned Kelly Armor Mask, include white card stock, Jumbo size craft sticks, tape, scissors, makers, and crayons.

TESTIMONIALS ABOUT OUR PRODUCTS

"In my nearly 30-year career in education, I have never seen children so engaged in their learning! International Travel Academy is truly a multi-disciplinary approach that enables children to explore the world in an unforgettable way. Students get a real sense of what it means to respect another country's heritage, beliefs and ways of living, thus making them more tolerant and internationally-minded. I highly recommend this program to educators and parents wishing to make learning come to life!"

– A Former Assistant Superintendent at Atlanta Public Schools

“(The five-day program) has given our school the unique opportunity to provide students with incredible experiences that align so well with our IB focus. Each spring with family and community support, our school essentially is transformed into our country of study for one full week. Teachers are easily able to follow the daily curriculum and activities provided, and the students truly enjoy this special week of instruction. From the art projects to festive food tastings, cultural dress, music, dance and traditions, the students spend this entire week engaged in new and exciting experiences of a new country. I would encourage all schools (IB, or not) to jump in and make a week like this happen for their students. It is incredibly gratifying to spend this week with kids as they come together to learn and share experiences like these across grade levels, school-wide. When we hear such rich discussion in classrooms and read their detailed writing about what they've learned as part of (the) week, it makes all the preparation, planning and expense totally worth it!! “
