What educators are saying

My students were fascinated by Genie Wiley's story. What a tragic case, but this is an excellent resource to use in sociology when learning about socialization. This resource was very simple to use. Students enjoyed the assignment and also learned a lot. I will definitely use this again!
Great resource and saved me a ton of time. My students were fascinated with the topic, and the guided notes and questions were just what I needed.

Description

This six page worksheet is useful for a sociology or psychology class studying nature vs. nurture and socialization. It reviews the general concepts and then explores them in regards to twin studies and the case of Genie Wiley. The worksheet is provided in print and a Google Doc.

To complete the activity, the class will use a number of online videos. There are questions over the videos to ensure students follow along and there are reflection questions at the end. The videos range in length from five minutes to thirteen minutes.

You may wish to show one video per day through the duration of you unit or to complete the video questions in sections.

Here is a breakdown of what is included on the worksheet:

1. Overview of the nature vs. nurture debate and a chart in which students address where they believe certain traits come from.

2. Twin studies and adoption: the process of socialization using identical twins, specifically those who have been raised apart.

3. Is it all in the genes?

4. Exploring a case of identical twin girls who were separated

5. Exploring a case of identical twin boys who were separated--and did not learn they had a twin until adulthood (there is an optional video included if students want to hear the rest of this fascinating case about twins who were separated and secretly studied)
