My students enjoyed the structure of this writing assignment. It was a new way for me to get to know my students and I was pleasantly surprised with how students opened up to me through this assignment.

Description

With this no prep, reflective personal narrative writing assignment, students reflect on their past, present, and future with the hopes that they continue on after high school graduation to fulfill their dreams and goals. You'll have everything you need to review semicolons - as this punctuation mark serves as the symbol for the prompt - along with the editable task and rubric. Great for use at the beginning of the school year, end of year, or new year!

Student Experience: A quick review of the function of a semicolon will set the groundwork for the prompt and allow students to think about how a semicolon can symbolize their own lives. Students will practice using semicolons correctly, then they will be begin drafting their narrative: "Don't Let Your Story End." After they've finished their narratives, students will create a semicolon craft for displaying their hopes and dreams for the future.

  • Common Core Standards This would make a unique writing diagnostic assessment and creative and purposeful getting to know you assignment.

♥ "Great resource to start the new year!"

♥ "Great lesson For the beginning of the year!"

♥ "Used this with my middle schoolers and they loved it! I had them read an article about the semi colon project, answer some questions posted around the room and then wrote this assignment."

♥ "Thank you so much for this great way to start the New Year! I used this today with my Freshman English class and it was a terrific lesson! The students loved it...especially the craftivity! Our semi-colons are now proudly posted to my bulletin board. I loved using the metaphorical sense of the semi-colon as an entry in to what might have otherwise been a "boring" grammar lesson. Very simple, yet very rich! Loved this resource! Highly recommended!"

♥ "Great way to get to know my new students and their writing styles!"

♥ "Love this! Was a great get to know you activity and my classroom is decked out with my student's semi colons!"
