NOVA's Secret Life of Scientists and Engineers Writing Prompts
- PPTX
Description
I just created this to use with my own students. NOVA has recently been promoting short video clips from scientists and engineers. The video clips show scientists talking about their job, how they got to that job, and/or their own passions and hobbies. They are interesting, and give students insight into scientists as real people.
I wanted my students to watch some of the videos to get an idea about the different careers available in science, as well as let them see the diversity of people found in these fields. I created a powerpoint template for my students to use for their writing. I have two prompts: one for general thoughts and responses and one that focuses on the career. My students have used this to create a sort of reflective journal. We watch a video clip periodically in class, and students create another slide in their powerpoint and reflect on it. We also discuss in student groups and share some thoughts with the class.
I've found this is a great way to practice writing and reflecting, and then increase communication with peers. My students have enjoyed watching the video clips, and they bring a fun aspect to class.
The enclosed download is a 10-slide powerpoint that includes teaching note ideas about the videos as well as a blog option, as well as 2 student template writing prompts. This is Microsoft Powerpoint, but I am able to upload the file to my student's class webpage, and they can open it in Google Slides and use that to create their own presentations.
