Topics included in this presentation:

Fire - This segment presents how chemical reactions in fire are occurring at the surface of the wood because the compounds within are reacting with atmospheric O₂. It touches upon the importance of oxygen in combustion: including a demonstration how a burning piece of bacon along with pressurized oxygen gets hot enough to cut through metal.

Cement - This segment explains how cement is created from the crushing of limestone and other materials and the chemical reactions that occur in the process. Touches upon both ionic and covalent bonding in Calcium Carbonate.

Haber-Bosch Process - This segment describes how the first synthetic fertilizers were made from the splitting of atmospheric N₂. Historical background is quite interesting.

Explosives - This segment describes how important the element nitrogen is within explosive compounds. It describes how energy is released when the nitrogen atoms separate from each other within the compound, are released to form N₂ when the compound decomposes. The concept of activation energy is included.

Chili Peppers - This segment discusses the biological interactions of the capsaicin molecule with heat receptors in the body.

Venom - This segment discusses how the venom from a snail is a complicated concoction of approximately 200 different proteins that target specific receptors in the body. The possible use of these toxins for medicinal purposes is also discussed.
