This listening comp resource is a collaboration between Art with Jenny K. and Brain Waves Instruction! We’ve combined our expertise to make learning more engaging and meaningful!

In this resource, you’ll find a collection of 4 listening passages (provided at 2 different levels), note taking worksheets where students will record their notes and learn about a specific listening or note taking strategy, and passage-specific comprehension question worksheets that correspond with interactive coloring images.

During each lesson, students will learn about a specific skill for listening and/or note taking. Then, they’ll practice the skill as they listen to an interesting passage two times. They’ll take notes during both readings. Then, they’ll answer questions based on the passage. Finally, they’ll create a unique piece of art with designs and shapes based on the answers to the comprehension questions. These lessons make listening and note taking so much fun!

This set of listening comprehension passages and activities is all about animals! Students will listen and learn about therapy dogs, courageous cats, horseracing, and elephants! You can teach these lessons sequentially or at different times throughout the school year!

Great news! This resource is all about differentiation and customization! That’s why you’ll find a variety of options for teaching listening comprehension in your classroom! Not only are the passages leveled,but you can also choose to teach the lessons with a “traditional” version or interactive notebook version of the resources!

Leveled Listening Passages

• There are 4 animal-themed listening passages in this resource.

• Each passage is written at 2 different levels.

• There are “beginner” and “advanced” versions of the passages.

• The beginner versions are a shorter length and include simpler vocabulary, while the advanced versions are more detailed with more challenging vocabulary.

• You’ll want to review both versions of the passages and select the one that works best for your students. Or, use different passages with different groups of students!

Choose an instructional style! There’s a “traditional” set of resources and an interactive notebook version of resources in this unit! Just choose the resources that work best for you and your students and get teaching!

The “traditional version” of handouts includes the following worksheets:

• Strategy Spotlight and Note Taking – This is where students will record notes about a specific strategy before writing notes during the multiple readings of the passage.
• Questions and Art – This worksheet includes the listening comprehension questions and corresponding art image that students will create based on their answers.

The “interactive notebook” version of handouts includes the following worksheets:

• Strategy Spotlight and Listening Reflection – This worksheet contains the tasks students will complete at the beginning and end of the lesson.
• Questions and Art – This worksheet includes the listening comprehension questions and corresponding art image that students will create based on their answers. They’ll add the art over their reflection in their interactive notebooks.
