Description
This lesson plan is one of six that are also found in the Matter and Its Interactions Bundle.
In this lab, students will combine common household chemicals at five different stations. After combining, they will look for signs that a chemical reaction occurred to determine if a new substance has been created or if it was a physical change.
This lab is aligned to the 5th grade NGSS performance expectation:
5-PS1-4. Conduct an investigation to determine whether the mixing of two or more substances results in new substances and MS-PS1-2. Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred. This lab could also be taught to grades 3 - 8, as it aligns to multiple NGSS standards.
Although physical and chemical changes are reviewed at the beginning of this lesson, this lab should be taught after physical and chemical changes. A lesson for that objective can be found here:
