How to use this with your students: (several, flexible options)

• One activity a day, for five days after the Christmas break

• One activity a day, for five days anytime in January

• As a complete activity (over several, continuous class periods)

• As bonus work for students who finish their work early

• As a homework activity to promote critical thinking skills

Note: Aside from the materials that you would already have in your classroom (pencils, pens, scissors and colored pencils or crayons), no additional supplies are needed! These escape room-style games were created as a print-and-go resource, so no extra prep has to be done on your part.

Group size: 3-5 students (Note: This can be completed as an individual and/or pair activity)

Time: Approximately 30 minutes per challenge (Provide hints along the way if time is a factor!)

THE TASK: Hurry! Due to a technological issue, the clock froze at 10:45 p.m. on December 31st, not allowing the world to advance. You have the opportunity to stop the time freeze, but you will have to successfully complete a series of tasks and challenges. For every successful challenge completion, you will advance the clock 15 minutes. Will you escape to 2024?

New Year Lingo #1:

In order to successfully complete this challenge, you will have to sharpen your pencil (and eyes!) and pay attention to the letters within the maze to identify various words. You will collect letters along your way, which will spell out popular New Year’s words. In addition, you will have to search to find hidden words related to the New Year, including a hidden, mystery item.

New Year Traditions #2:

What are some of your New Year’s traditions? In order to successfully complete this challenge, you will have to be able to correctly identify some fun facts about popular New Year’s traditions around the world. Be careful though! If you incorrectly answer any of the questions, you will be penalized for not bringing the decorations to the party!

New Year Resolutions #3:

In order to successfully complete this challenge, you will have to work together to decode some well-known New Year’s resolutions. Three separate cryptogram activities have been included. Once completed, you will then attempt to unscramble all of the shaded letter boxes for three more resolutions, which will provide you with the answer to one final resolution.

New Year Headlines #4:

Put your detective skills in place because this challenge is going to require you to unlock a secret message in a unique font found taped to the door at a New Year’s Eve party. In order to successfully complete this challenge, you will have to answer a series of questions based on three separate New Year’s themed newspaper articles.

New Year Greetings #5:

Unscramble the letters in the puzzle to reveal the missing word in the New Year’s greeting. Once completed, you will then attempt to unscramble all of the shaded letter boxes, which will provide you with the answer to one final greeting.

*Upon completion of the challenges, three themed ("The Great New Year Escape") editable certificates have been included, so you can easily type in a name and date and give each student who participated something for their efforts! In addition, a one-page, post-activity reflection on the escape room has also been included.
