NATO Phonetic Alphabet/Military Alphabet Activity for Kids
- PDF
- Easel Activity
Description
This activity is designed for students to be introduced to the NATO Phonetic Alphabet, in conjunction with facts about the usage in WWII. Students will read a short article explaining the alphabet and its history of integration into WWII, and answer a series of questions for deciphering the alphabet.
This can serve as an extension, integration, or as a stand alone activity. This was written for upper Elementary, but can be integrated into any beginning unit on the Phonetic Alphabet/Military Alphabet.
*Note that this only has the most recent version of the alphabet present, not the WWII edition in efforts to not confuse younger students about the changes between alphabets.
This is designed as an extension on communication standards in WWII topics, using SC curriculum as a foundation.
SC Standards:
5-4 The student will demonstrate an understanding of American economic challenges in the 1920s and 1930s and world conflict in the 1940s.
5-4.6 Summarize key developments in technology, aviation, weaponry, and communication and their effects on World War II and the United States economy.
