4.1 Personal Competence. Students with gifts and talents demonstrate growth in personal competence and dispositions for exceptional academic and creative productivity. These include self-awareness, self-advocacy, self-efficacy, confidence, motivation, resilience, independence, curiosity, and risk-taking (National Association for Gifted Children, 2019).
Critical dispositions outlined in this standard are used as a framework for instruction in the unit. Lesson 1 focuses on self-awareness, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and regulating emotions. Lesson 2 addresses self-advocacy, looking at assertive communication styles and how to respectfully affect change. Lesson 3 looks at self-efficacy, understanding strengths, believing in one’s capacity, and accomplishing goals. Lesson 4 explores motivation, defining values, and reflecting on how values affect motivation. Lesson 5 centers on resilience, considering how courageously trying new things, embracing mistakes, and demonstrating a growth mindset can contribute to academic and creative productivity and emotional well-being.
