What educators are saying

I'm using this with a small class of seniors as we reflect on their school years. An eye-catching & inspirational resource. (We previously wrote 'Dear Freshman Me' letters.)
This was an excellent project for my grade 8s! Great for making new years resolutions or for the beginning of the year. It was simple to use and assign, and my students really enjoyed it.

Description

AN OVERVIEW:

This lesson is designed to help students both set goals for the future and reflect on their past.  This lesson is two parts: one, students will write and reflect, and two, students will design a piece of digital art to use as a desktop or cell phone wallpaper.

THE LESSON:

Students begin with a written reflection activity in class. This student handout is prepared for you and editable on Google Docs. This can easily be printed or assigned through Google Classroom (or other LMS platform).

Once they've reflected (everything is outlined for you in the detailed lesson plan!), students then embark on creating a digital art piece that embodies their One Word of the year. This digital art can be used as the student's desktop or cell phone wallpaper.

THIS PRODUCT INCLUDES:

  1. A detailed lesson plan
  2. A student reflection handout (editable)
  3. A digital Google Slides template for students to create their digital art piece in both desktop sized and cell phone wallpaper sized options. (editable)
  4. A digital Canva template for students to create their digital art piece in both desktop sized and cell phone wallpaper sized options. (editable)

CURRICULAR USES IN THE CLASSROOM:

  • I like to use this activity at the start and end of semesters.  It’s a great back to school get to know you activity and it’s a wonderful way to end a semester before leaving for winter or summer break.
  • Use this activity as a creative element to a novel unit!  Students can answer the questions fictionally based on a character from the novel that you are currently reading in class.  Ask them to write a defense for their image to add an argumentative writing element to the assignment.
  • Use this in an AVID or other homeroom/SEL environment.  This can easily be used outside of the English classroom for any student’s reflections.
  • Use this as a classroom management tool.  Have the class reflect on their struggles and successes as a class and agree on the one word that they all want to have for the upcoming semester or other time frame.
