Description

This vocabulary product was designed as a differentiated way to give emerging readers an opportunity to learn new basic vocabulary words (Tier 1 words), words most often occurring in Level A-H books, while giving them multiple opportunities to read and reread text to build fluency and confidence. It is designed to be delivered to students “when they are ready”, meaning systematically yet in a personalized and differentiated way. This product of learning words (mostly all vocabulary nouns) need only be prepped once. Print, cut and staple a class set of each “book” so you end of with a class set for every letter. I have them all cut, organized and ready to go using plastic baskets from The Dollar Tree with tab dividers separating the Letter A books from Letter B books, for example. If students only know a few letters of the alphabet, like S-A and M for example (like if their name is Sam), then ask that student ”Would you like to start reading the Book of S Things or the Book of M Things?” Give the student the choice, and let them be charge of the vocabulary words they want to learn next. And, continue distributing individual books in this way. I’ve included an easy to see record sheet so you can mark off what books you’ve given to who. I’ve also included a Student Record sheet, so students can keep track of the letters they know, books they should have and a space for a sticker once they can read all the words (if you choose the books in this way). By the end of October, students should have a nice little library of personal books in their individual reading basket and be ready to read these words in context of the Level A – H books they will soon be reading. Between all the books, students will learn 416 basic vocabulary words.

Materials include:
Teacher and Student Data Sheets
Product Rationale and Directions for Assembling & Organizing
26 Vocabulary Books (where each word in the book begins with the same letter)
28 Divider Tabs

Prep this once (summer is a perfect time) and be ready for the year. Prep includes copying, cutting and stapling a class set of each book. It's my vision that these books are part of core instructional materials for grades K-1. Enrichment for PreK and Intervention for any 2nd-5th grader needing to learn a large amount of vocabulary words. For K and 1, since books are distributed in a personalized way "when each student is ready" (which is very Montessori) I would also envision that they all have a full set by the end of October (if started at the beginning of the year) so there is some urgency to the vocabulary acquisition.
