What educators are saying

My students love music and it really helps me to diversify what I share with them and to show them just how varied both music and artists are!

Description

This package is the perfect item for any teacher who wants to begin incorporating musical artists in the classroom and doesn't know where to begin. It is also perfect for those teachers who have already began implementing a Musique Mercredi, but are having a hard time finding artist from Francophone Islands or African countries. I usually do one artist a week, giving you 30 weeks of music lessons/artists!

Included in this package is:

  • 30 different artist from the following 20 countries:

DRC

Senegal

Algeria

Martinique

The Ivory Coast

Mali

Morocco

Rwanda

Guadeloupe

Saint Martin

Cameron

Burkina Faso

Comoros

Corsica

Guyana

Mauritius

Benin

Ghana (I know this country was never under French rule, but as it is surrounded by countries who have been, their citizens speak French and they have recently petitioned to make French an official language.)

***While some of the artist may be living in France, they have African or Island origins and that is why they are on the list. Not all artist are currently living in Africa/Islands.

  • A link to a cultural video for each country.

I may have more than one artist for a certain country and have used the same cultural video for both in some circumstances if I didn’t find a better video. For many of the countries, the cultural video I have used is the "Geography Now!" series. It is an excellent way to introduce many of the countries, as this is sometimes student's first exposure to them. They give a very well-rounded background to the countries and provide historical and geographical background as well.

  • Two different levels of student response sheets. One response sheet is in English for the lower-levels and the other is in French for the upper-levels. These sheets collect information on each artists and ask students their opinions about the music, if they can compare the artist to anyone here in the U.S. and what French they understood, if any.

Each artist has their own presentation within one big google slides presentation. This is NOT made up of a bunch of little presentations.

Each artist has the following slides:

  • Name of song
  • Name of artist
  • What year the song was created
  • What city they live in (and what origins they have)
  • Most have a geography check-in slide that asks the students where they believe that city/country is located.
  • What continent the country is located on
  • A music video link
  • A cultural video link

***While some of the artist may be living in France, they have African or Island origins and that is why they are on the list. Not all artist are currently living in Africa/Islands.

  • I have also included brief notes on how I use this lesson in my classroom.
