Description

Music/Hand Staff Posters! Instant Assessment Tool & Graphic Organizer

These Music/Hand Staff graphic organizers can be printed out as posters, handouts, or projected using a computer, smart board, or overhead projector, etc. The first page shows the treble clef, page two shows the bass clef, and page three reviews the note names for the treble and bass clefs on two large music staves (all three pages are in either COLOR or B+W, in case you need to print large quantities for a class or if you only have a B+W printer!). Included in this product are instructions on how to teach students that the hand staff can represent the music staff. Using this visual guide can provide you with instant assessments to gauge how well your beginners are learning the basics of music notation.

**These posters/handouts are aligned with the current NATIONAL CORE ARTS STANDARDS and meet approximately seven (7) standards.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Print out as a poster or handout to provide students with a visual aid/graphic organizer of notes on the music staff. Students use one hand to represent the music staff (as shown). The fingertips are used to represent the lines (5), and the spaces between each finger represent the spaces of the music staff.  I ask students to use their left hand for the music staff, and their right-hand index finger to point to their left-hand fingertips or spaces in between their fingertips. Count up, then down, lines, then spaces.

After having students identify the lines, spaces, and corresponding letter names for the hand staff, you can quiz them in two ways: First, point to a line or space on your hand staff, then ask them to identify either the number or letter name. For example, “Line two” or “Space three.” I ask them to wait until I count down from three to give me the answer - “3, 2, 1…tell me.” This gives everyone a chance to think about the answer before the faster students give an answer first.

I repeat the process in a different way, where students identify the numbers and letter names on their own hands. For example, “On your hand staff, point to line five. 3, 2, 1…show me!” or “Point to A. 3, 2, 1…tell me!” This is a great assessment tool because you can instantly assess which students are struggling to learn the staff and which students have already grasped the concept.
