Unit 1. Music in Film - The Importance of Music in Film
The first unit serves as an introductory to all the other units ahead. Students get a small taste of theme music, how music can be deceptive, sound effects, instrumentation, scoring, films with and without music, script writing to cinematic music, and more.
Unit 2. Music in Film - Theme Music in Movies
Students experience how theme music is created for characters. Students also engage in utilizing whatever instruments you have at your disposal to create theme songs for various characters which are provided as well. Body percussion is also always an option of course! This unit ends with a very fun activity which students listen to theme music from movies, and see if they can know which movies they are from by listening.
Unit 3. Music in Film - How Music Deceives us
Students will explore how film composers can change how the audience views a character based off the choice of music. Students will be deceived as they watch a clip of characters with uplifting music, only to watch the same clip a second time with suspicious sounding music and change their opinions of that character. Students explore how whole films can also change once the music changes. Students end the unit by engaging in choosing music for short films that they see most appropriate.
Unit 4. Music in Film - The Art of Instrumentation
Students explore how different instruments can be used to represent small characters, big characters, and events that take place in films. Student choose which instrument would best represent characters or events to several short films in this unit. Students end the unit by creating a piece of music that represents several soundscapes which are provided. Body Percussion works great for educators with limited instruments at their disposal!
Content learning in this lesson includes:
String Instruments
Brass Instruments
Woodwind Instruments
Percussion instruments
Unit 5. Music in Film - The Art of Sound Effects
Students learn about how in most films we watch, most sounds we hear are due to the Art of Foley. Students learn about the Art of Foley by watching artists create sound effects for a short film. Students later create sound effects for very short clips (bird flapping wings) or (footsteps). Students end this unit with a fun activity which involves them searching the classroom for objects they will use to create sound effects for an entire short film (clip by clip).
Unit 6. Music in Film - Scoring With The Musical Elements
This lesson builds off unit 4, as students engage in how dynamics, tempo, and texture is used in film music. Students watch several short films clip by clip as the music reacts with different dynamics, tempo, and texture. Whether these elements of music react to characters or events in the film, students get a great understanding of how film composers work.
The final activity students will see a movie with no music, and will be prompted what dynamics, tempo, and texture they would use clip by clip.
