Music Unit Planning Guide / Templates
- PDF
Description
These templates are designed for music teachers (but can be used for any subject area, particularly specials/electives) to guide them in unit planning. I know I used to get overwhelmed when I would plan units because I had so many ideas but I wasn't sure how to organize them. Units can be themed (right now I'm teaching a "sun and moon" unit to pre-k through 1st grade), skill-based (ex. steady beat unit), or for older grades, the "unit" could be your preparation for a concert.
This set includes a unit overview to help you think through cross curricular connections, different levels of assessment, brainstorm warm-ups & activities that relate to your unit, and ensure that you have created opportunities for improvisation, performance, student leadership, and more. It also includes "lesson breakdowns." These are not necessarily intended to be your formal lesson plans, but rather a three week snapshot of how you will structure your activities and assessments. This is a great tool for backwards planning.
I have taught pre-k through 12th grade, general music, choir, band, and guitar, and I have used this resource for all of them! I included two versions of the lesson breakdown. The 2 day version is for those general music teachers who only see their students twice a week. The 5 day version is for those teachers who see their students everyday.
