Why Chunking Works for Multisyllable Words:

• Breaks overwhelming words into smaller parts
• Builds confidence by showing them they already know how to read each little part of the word
• Promotes blending syllables
• Gives them a strategy they can use when they encounter new multisyllabic words in their reading
• Using different colors helps students visualize the syllable "chunks"

Chunking Instructions:

(The first card of each deck has chunking prompts to practice with)

1. Finger Trace: Trace the colored swooping lines with your finger as you read each “chunk”.
2. Hand Cover: Cover the word with your hand. Reveal and read one “chunk” at a time.
3. Read: Slide your finger across the arrow and read the whole word!
