This 5-day project-based math resource applies math concepts in a real-world scenario to teach students about multiplying a fraction by a whole number. In this 5-day unit, students will apply fraction concepts to design a bakery. This fraction math project is engaging and authentic. Plus, it's available as both a digital and print resource.
This project-based math resource covers concepts of fraction multiplication and is aligned with the following 4th Grade Math Common Core State Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NF.B.4
- Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction by a whole number.
This resource is available in both Printable & Digital Google Slides versions.
What's included in this resource:
•Background Knowledge: Using a KWL, students will build background knowledge around designing and opening a bakery.
•Multiplying a Fraction by a Whole Number: Using the included instructional pages, students will learn how to multiply a fraction by a whole number with visual models.
•Simplifying Fractions: Using the included instructional pages, students will learn how to simplify fractions and apply this skill to the rest of their work.
•Select Menu Options: Students will select from a variety of options to create a menu for their bakery.
•Calculate Quantities of Ingredients Needed Each Day: Using fraction multiplication concepts, the students will calculate how much they need for each ingredient each day.
•Build a Display Case: Students will determine a layout for their display case and use fraction concepts to determine how many items they can place on each display shelf.
•Choose Flooring: Students will choose from a selection of flooring options and use fraction multiplication to choose the best flooring for their bakery.
•Painting Options: Students will calculate the amount of paint needed from a variety of paint choices to paint their bakery sign.
•Wrap Up: Students will write up their final bakery design plan and explain their decisions.
