Description

Practice multiplication on a number line with this fun game! This game addresses 4.NF.4. Teaches students to recognize a fraction a/b as a multiple of 1/b (e.g., use a visual fraction model to represent 5/4 as the product 5 x (1/4), recording the conclusion by the equation 5/4 = 5 x (1/4))

In this game, the children will solve multiplication problems involving fractions and whole numbers. They will solve the problem and move up the number lines to try to reach the whole number four first.

The game is designed for a file folder. It includes the title page with directions and materials, a set of cards (you will need to cut out and paste onto index cards), and two game boards.

This is an excel sheet. To get to the different pages, look at the bottom left corner of the excel sheet and click on the different sheets.

Here are the directions to the game:

1. Player one draws a card and gives the answer. Player two checks to verify that he or she has given the correct answer. If the correct answer is given, player one may move up that many spaces on a number line that matches the answer. Example: If the answer is 1 2/3, the player may only move up 1 2/3 on the number line divided into thirds. If the answer is 1 3/6 = 1 ½ and the player gave BOTH answers, the player may choose to move up on the line divided into sixths or the line divided into halves.

2. Player two then take his or her turn. Player two draws a card and gives the answer. Player one checks to verify that he or she has given the correct answer. If the correct answer is given, player one may move up that many spaces on a number line that matches the answer. (Remember that you may only move up on a number line if that answer is on your paper or whiteboard.)

3. Players will continue to take turns until one player is able to get all three markers to the 4. The final moves must be exact moves. Your answer cannot be 5/.6 and you only move 3/6 to get to the 4.
