Multiple Subject Learning with the Handy Factory

Common core demands integration of subjects. The Handy Factory has been used by Patricia Kienzle, "Pickle Lady," for about 15 years. While teaching character education and life skills, with an emphasis on work ethic, it has had lessons involving math, government and writing. Other subjects easily added are history, science, and geography.
This is a hands-on activity that requires students to work together in producing factory products. Students have a payday and shop in the factory store. Students must first purchase items a family really needs.
The Handy Factory has had great reviews from parents. Students begin asking at he beginning of the school year when they will get to work in the factory.
