What educators are saying

I have students that can calculate math problems easily- they know what steps they need to do and when- but, they struggle with making simple calculation errors-they forget to take away one during subtraction, etc. This activity helped those students to be more mindful of those errors!
Wonderful activity for small groups. Great discussions in the groups as well as the class. Thank you!

Description

UPDATED on 12/1/17: This resource now includes an activity and an exit slip!

This is such a great way to get students discussing mathematics! Students look at the work completed for seven two-step or multi-step equations and try to find the errors made. They describe the errors, then solve the equations to find the correct solutions. Some problems have more than one error.

These equations do NOT include variables on both sides.

Included in this resource:

1) A double sided error analysis worksheet.

2) A fun activity in which students are given equation and get to purposely make mistakes. Then students can trade papers and try to find each other's mistakes!

3) A reflection page, in which student can describe common errors and how they can be prevented, as well as assessing what (for them) was easy and difficult about this type of assignment.

4) An exit slip with one problem to analyze the errors.

These types of worksheets are great for partners or small groups. Students quickly realize these are common errors, and many students have made the same mistakes before.

Students like having the opportunity to "grade" someone else's work!
