Mr. Jared's Music Sight Reading Course will teach your students to quickly recognize note names.

Who is this for?

This course is designed to be used in a middle school music classroom, but anyone who wants a basic understanding of how to read music can benefit from it.

How the course is designed

This is based on a learning model called the “forgetting curve.” When you are given new information, you are likely to remember it for a short time. Reintroduce it, and it will stick for longer. Repeat, and it will be even longer. Eventually, the information is in your long term memory. You’ve learned it.

This course does exactly that. Once a note is introduced, it is reintroduced at successively longer and longer intervals, so learning happens as efficiently as possible.

But please do not expect your students to instantly be able to sight read music. This course does not teach audiation of pitches, rhythmic values, or interval recognition. What it does, is very quickly lay a solid foundation on which to build those principles.

How to use the course in the classroom

This is a video based course with twenty 5-8 minute lessons in which students fill out worksheets as they follow along with the video. Worksheets provide a place for the student’s answer, and the correct answer if necessary. 

Please note that this should not be scored like a traditional lesson, as the material is being taught and corrected at the same time. Rather, collect the student papers at the end of each lesson, and at a glance, you will be able to see how much of the lesson each student got correct. Class average should be around 75%-80% correct before moving on to a new lesson.

One pdf worksheet is provided which is numbered up to 60, even though some of the lessons are shorter than that. Once you have bought this course, you may duplicate the worksheets as often as you need to.
