Description

This is a captivating, hands-on unit on Music in Film! Comprising of three sections: listening, analysis, and composition, students get to explore the purpose of movie music and how it makes movies come to life!

Note: There is an embedded slideshow link, a fillable PDF of the Movie Music Analysis Packet, and printable PDFs for everything. Due to copyright reasons, I do not provide editable Google Slides.

INCLUDES:

-Slideshow of Movie Music Unit: begins with a short synopsis on John Williams and his most famous movie compositions. Then the unit is split into 3 parts: Listening, Analysis, and Composition. Students learn to notice how music evokes emotion and enhances movie clips. It is a very thorough and hands-on unit, engaging all students!

-Quick-start Teacher Summary: a guide for the teacher in how to run the unit

-Movie Music Analysis Packet: This is a hands-on activity in which students watch 14 different movie clips and analyze the tempo, the mood, the instruments, and the plot. If you feel uncomfortable with a movie selection, you can always change it or omit it. They are all school-appropriate for middle/high school aged. (You can also shorten the clip to omit something.)

Movie Titles Include:

  1. Pirates of the Caribbean
  2. The Incredibles
  3. ET
  4. Black Panther
  5. The Titanic
  6. Jurassic Park
  7. Star Wars
  8. Jaws
  9. Harry Potter
  10. La La Land
  11. Moana
  12. Guardians of the Galaxy
  13. The Greatest Showman
  14. Avatar

**If for some reason the youtube links do not work, try opening them again. I periodically check to see if they are up to date. At times with youtube, clips are randomly erased. I will do my best to check on them.

- Student Directions for Movie Music Composition: For the composing segment, they will get to work in partners and choose a movie clip that they would like to write their own music to. Using the free website "Chrome Music Lab: Song Maker," they will have the freedom to be creative and release their inner-composers!

My middle school students loved learning about music in film, the important role it plays in movies, and being able to write their own composition using technology!
