What educators are saying

This was such a fine writing project to do with my students. This really allowed my second graders to use their descriptive writing skills and to have fun while doing it.
My class loved this monster writing activity! I changed the directions a bit to make it more challenging, requiring them to integrate how their monster looked into an actual story with a beginning, middle, and end. They did very well. They loved drawing the monsters!

Description

This no prep Halloween monster writing activity has students secretly create their own monster and write a matching description. Then, all of the students' monsters are placed on display while students read their descriptions. If they use enough descriptive details, the class should be able to figure out which monster was theirs, just based on the description!

The resource includes scaffolded pages to help students walk through the writing process and write a successful descriptive essay. It makes a great Halloween descriptive writing activity!

This fun monster essay writing activity includes:

  • a descriptive writing mini lesson - students analyze the provided paragraphs using a rubric, thinking about how well the author added descriptive details and organized the paragraph
  • a blank page for students to "build your own monster" / draw a monster
  • scaffolded pages to help students go through the entire writing process as they write their descriptive essay - includes brainstorming, rough draft, revising and editing, and final draft pages
  • a grading rubric to help you assess student writing

This is a fun descriptive writing lesson around Halloween for 3rd and 4th grade students.
