What educators are saying

Fun activity before we learned about the Monroe Doctrine. Had some fun answers that lead to great class discussions about the Monroe Doctrine.
My students loved this! They were very engaged and caught on very quickly. No trouble at all getting them to complete! Very fun but also informative!!

Description

In this engaging Monroe Doctrine actiivty, students work independently to analyze six cartoons relating to the Monroe Doctrine before making a final claim on their understanding, then evaluating their own work. For each picture, students describe what they see happening, then make a prediction about how it might relate to the Monroe Doctrine. This lesson is intended to guide student intrigue and enable students to make predictions about what the Monroe Doctrine was and its effects.

This is great lesson for anticipatory learning. It also does well at grabbing student interest, since they are looking, recognizing, and reacting (rather than simply reading, listening, and writing). At the conclusion, students make a "final prediction" that culminates on what they've seen across all six Monroe Doctrine images. Then, students watch two videos to determine how accurate they were in their predictions! Another video is included to evaluate how the United States still follows the doctrine today.

This resource includes a paper in-class version and a 1:1 Google compatible version to be used in conjunction with Google Classroom. Just follow the included instructions for how to access the Google version, then share the resource through Google or assign via Google Classroom. This will allow students to type directly into the document!
