What educators are saying

The students loved this practice with Punnett squares midway through the unit. Filling in the square and them coloring the monster the correct color is a great hands-on activity.
My students were engaged while using this resource. It is exactly what my students needed to practice genetics.

Description

This resource comes with three worksheets involving monohybrid crosses. In order to successfully complete these worksheets, students need an understanding of how to solve Punnett squares and know the definitions of dominant, recessive, heterozygous, homozygous, genotype, phenotype and purebred. Read below for more details about each worksheet.

--Worksheet 1: Students read descriptions and solve Punnett squares to identify each monster’s genotype and phenotype. Then they color the monsters accordingly. A second version of this worksheet gives easy differentiation by providing the allele pairs next to the Punnett squares. Both versions have the same questions and answers.

--Worksheet 2: This worksheet is similar to worksheet one but has different questions and monsters. A differentiated worksheet is provided.

--Worksheet 3: Students get more creative in this worksheet by choosing the monster’s parents’ genetic makeup. Then they solve a Punnett square to find each monster’s genotype and phenotype. This worksheet does not come with a differentiated version.

Develop and use a model to describe why asexual reproduction results in offspring with identical genetic information and sexual reproduction results in offspring with genetic variation. Emphasis is on using models such as Punnett squares, diagrams, and simulations to describe the cause and effect relationship of gene transmission from parent(s) to offspring and resulting genetic variation.
