    Purpose & Background

I created this curriculum to assist teachers in teaching Geometry to struggling students. It is a modified curriculum designed for any teacher to teach Geometry and for any student to learn the skills and content in Geometry. Working with struggling students who were not very engaged with the traditional lecture-based approach to teaching Geometry, I slowly began to collect all the skills and content and modified them in a way that makes sense for my struggling students. As a special education teacher often assigned to new content areas I had never taught before, I created this curriculum to ensure I understood the prior knowledge struggling students would need before they could understand new skills or content. This curriculum is the product of many years of effort dedicated to helping all of my students learn the content and skills in a Geometry classroom.

How Should I Use the Curriculum?

With this curriculum, you won’t have to create worksheets or handouts for your students. You can simply print the handouts for each day or for the whole year to teach your students. You can make changes by switching the units or changing the numbers of each lesson for your students. You can control the difficulty of solving problems. For each unit, I include the following order: Assessments, Interactive Notebooks, Activities, and Projects. You can choose to do the interactive notebooks first or at the end of the notes. It can be a good way to study for the assessment as well. Initially, I recommend having the students follow what you do in the beginning. As they become familiar with the routines, you can control how much they do and how much you do. With this curriculum, I organize it by categories so students are familiar with what they should do. I try to maintain the same routines for my students, typically starting with activating their prior knowledge or having them complete something they can do on their own. This should allow you some time to get students settled down and begin to work. Use this time to take attendance and get ready for the class. The categories you will find are warm-up, notes, activity, practice, and extension.

Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures.
Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles.
Recognize a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts. Identify line-symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry.
Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g., 𝘹-axis and 𝘹-coordinate, 𝘺-axis and 𝘺-coordinate).
Represent real world and mathematical problems by graphing points in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane, and interpret coordinate values of points in the context of the situation.
