What educators are saying

I have used this for 2 years now and I love it. The curriculum that we use it great for story problems but not for the basics. This is straight to the point and big enough to use with protectors, unlike our work books. I also love the challenge pages for my high fliers.
A very helpful resource for the students and myself. It is well laid out and helps keep the students focused.

What are teachers saying about this complementary & supplementary angles lesson?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “I love anything by Sally Witherspoon!  The lesson plan is clear, the short teaching time that is straight to the point, then gradual release is fabulous.  My students love working in partners before they do their work independently. ” -Wendolyn B.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “This was the perfect way to cover angle measurements! It gave examples so that we were able to do several problems together and then also give students individual practice. Will be using over and over in the years to come!” -Jamie A.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “I love using Sally’s lesson whenever I have a sub! The directions are clear and the lesson planning is already done for me! And the kids love the challenge work and the partner work!” -TpT Buyer

How can I use this "Solving for Missing Angles" packet?

  • Supplement your core curriculum
  • Reteach or remediation unit
  • Small group math intervention
  • Tutoring or homeschool
  • Test-prep

This “Solving for Missing Angles” packet asks students to:

  • Use addition & subtraction to solve for missing angles
  • Add smaller angles together to find the measure of a bigger missing angle
  • Solve for a missing angle using an understanding of complementary & supplementary angles (right angles and straight angles)
  • Decompose an angle into smaller pieces (ie split an existing angle into 5 equal angles)
  • Connect identical, smaller angles to make a larger angle.  Understand that, like any unit of measurement, degrees can be multiplied or divided.

Note: 4th graders do not need to know the term “Complementary & Supplementary Angles” explicitly, however, they do need to use their knowledge of right and straight angles to solve for missing angles.

What does Sally’s “gradual release model” entail?

  • Sally’s lessons follow an “I Do, We Do, You Do” format.  A math concept is introduced whole group, students then practice with a partner, and finish with independent work time.  This deliberate scaffolding keeps students from feeling defeated or frustrated!
  • Sally’s packets also build slowly in difficulty.  We meet students where they are, regardless of level.  As students gain confidence, the problems get progressively harder.  Not all students will complete all problems and that is by design!
  • Each packet finishes with a “Challenge Page” for anyone who needs something extra!  Multiple pages of practice are included in every lesson to avoid early finishers.

In addition to the deliberate scaffolding in this 4th grade geometry review, the instructional guide is jam-packed with teaching hacks and best practices for solving for missing angles and complementary & supplementary angles.  There is also a “Misconceptions” section that allows you to be one step ahead of mistakes students are most likely to make!

These geometry worksheets are common core aligned to 4.MD.7 (Recognizing angles as additive and using angle relationships to solve for unknown angles- including complementary & supplementary angles).

Recognize angle measure as additive. When an angle is decomposed into non-overlapping parts, the angle measure of the whole is the sum of the angle measures of the parts. Solve addition and subtraction problems to find unknown angles on a diagram in real world and mathematical problems, e.g., by using an equation with a symbol for the unknown angle measure.
