Description

This work was originally completed as a dissertation for the specific purpose of gathering evidence of the effect of typography on reading. Miles Tinker is the foremost source for research that shows, from eye movements to typographical factors, how visual presentation affects the reading process. As Tinker's work demonstrates, teacher-made materials can significantly benefit from understanding which typographical design decisions will help students optimize reading and which will cause them increased challenge in studying and learning. Tinker was a foremost reading expert in his day after spending 30 years in pursuit of this body of work.

Graphic designers will also develop a deeper understanding of how their decisions can lay the groundwork for reading such materials as assembly instructions and other practical purposes, as opposed to visual effects that grab attention in order to attract attention to a product.

This book may also offer ideas for further research, such as on computer screens, for budding scholars who seek further education in cognitive psychology or related studies at the graduate level in the area of visual perception.
