Description

Hello and thank you for your purchase of “Clay & Ceramic Coil Mandalas”. If you are struggling with getting your students excited about coils or out of ideas and tired of the basic coil pot, this tutorial is for you. Beautiful results with a step by step guided video provides the perfect set up for online OR in the classroom learning. So, whether you're hybrid, in person or virtual only you can utilize this video and its techniques.

So, what is a clay mandala? Infusing the idea of radial art and design with ceramics, coils become a vessel in which the viewer sees radial design. Students build up from a flattened surface and experiment with their design before they finalize it. The final results are always surprising- rarely are 2 student works the same! Students can practice the art of coil making without the stress of building upwards and battling gravity. Instead, this project allows students to build on a surface, and in relief fashion. Students will practice using symmetry, pattern and repetition in their work as they design their own coil mandala.

This project aims to build confidence with coil building. In my experience, coils can be a struggle for students to master. By utilizing the coil reference sheet, and video tutorial students will be able to quickly master this concept, leaving the struggle behind! The video tutorial walks the viewer through step by step instructions on how to create 10 different coil techniques and how to use coils to create a radial design pattern on a clay slab. This tutorial also explains how to use a household object as a template and the importance of connecting clay together using the score and slip method. Interested in more coil based content? Check out Coil Pottery Techniques & Project. Looking for something else relief based? Check out Ceramic Clay Landscapes or my new product Animal Head Sculptures for a unique challenge!

This product is meant to be a project that takes 3-5 days to complete. It is important to play around with some design ideas first before permanently attaching pieces together. Student Work featured in the tutorial used 3 Zoom calls and 2 days of independent work time. For distance learning purposes you can go a variety of routes. The first option is to share the video during a Zoom call and then have the students work independently via zoom. Alternatively, you can share the video and pause at various points and have the students work as they go. This video link can also be shared to any digital learning platform where students can have access to it at any time.
