Learning the basic color names is an important part of Preschool. Begin your lesson by introducing the colors. The colors are the six basic rainbow colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. There are six posters provided with one colorful mermaid tails and the color word on the poster. There is also another piece of paper with all six colors and mermaids labeled. This can be used as a smaller handout or cut to make color word vocabulary cards.

Once kids know the color words, it’s time to practice. They can practice each word independently with six Color and Trace papers. These papers have a blank tail that’s ready for coloring. The directions say to color the tail the appropriate color. These papers have color clues as the words are colored the correct color. Example: when it says to color the tail blue, blue is blue. The color word is at the bottom for kids to trace.

Play a game with two sets of the color word matching cards. There are six colorful tails and six color word cards. There are also six mermaid color cards and six color word cards. Students can shuffle them and play go fish or turn them upside down and play a matching game.

There is another mermaid coloring paper with the tails and the color words. This one is a little harder than the color and trace since there is no color clue for the students so they must be familiar with the word. If not working on reading, you can read the word for them so they can just practice remembering the word.

Finally, there are two mermaid matching pages where kids match the colorful tails and mermaids with the correct color word.

In Sort the Mermaids, students can practice sorting with the big ocean labels and the color words. There are three colored mermaids per color. The color word on the labels is not colored but the coral around the word provides a hint for the kids. Once they have sorted by color, they can practice sorting the mermaid in other ways like swimming or sitting, hands up or hands down. They should work on explaining their criteria for sorting.

Once kids are super familiar with the color words, you are ready to make a mermaid! Students can practice making patterns by using colorful mermaid tops and tails as well as colored shells. They can mix and match on their own or they can use the combination cards to make the required combination. There are 36 combination cards for the mermaid tops and tails. Once kids have mastered those, you can throw in the shells. There are also 36 combination cards for the shells and mermaids. There are is one page with the mermaid tops in red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. Then there is one page with the tail cards in the same colors. Finally, there is one page of red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple shells.

The cover page for this lesson can also act as a nice poster for your room as you study this unit.
