Description
So you've decided to implement a mental math approach to teaching math facts and you're wondering where to start! If you want to help your students build true fluency with the addition facts this year, you've come to the right place.
Too often math fact fluency is viewed as only speed and accuracy. This drives teaching practices like timed tests and memorization. But true addition fluency also incorporates flexibility and appropriate strategy use. When we teach only for memorization, we leave many of our students behind!
It's no secret that there is a big gap in many students' understanding of math facts. To help bridge this gap, we must focus on teaching students to understand addition conceptually, rather than simply expecting them to memorize facts without making the proper connections.
This bundle of mental math addition strategy units is designed to teach math facts in a conceptual, flexible way. We don't want students to simply memorize the facts - we want them to UNDERSTAND them! This will lead to automaticity.
This bundle of addition resources inludes seven units, each teaching a different strategy for addition fluency. These are:
- Counting On
- Doubles
- Near Doubles (Doubles Plus One, Doubles Plus Two)
- Make a Ten
- Making Multiples of Ten
- Left to Right Addition
- Break Apart

My Math Fact Philosophy
My resources are created with this philosophy in mind:
•Math should be taught using the Concrete-Representational-Abstract model.
•UNDERSTANDING math facts is more important than memorizing math facts. Conceptual understanding is the key to math fact fluency.
•Students must be able to visualize the math to really understand it.
•True math fact fluency is more than just speed and accuracy. It also includes flexibility, which is essential to true fluency.
•One of the best ways to build flexibility is by making connections and forming relationships between facts.
This article on my website dives into addition strategies in more detail.
Have a wonderful day!
