What educators are saying

This was a challenging unit for my ASD class. They were engaged with the activities and very interested. They took a bit longer to unpack with the class but overall it was a really positive experience for the classroom.

Description

This three-week unit, geared toward junior high and high school students, focuses on the components of print media.

Every day, students will have a different "daily media study," which could be recent magazine articles or advertisements, billboard advertisements, newspaper articles, or journals. Students analyze what they see and write down a response on their own blog pages.

Students also have a magazine packet, which focuses on many magazine components as well as writing lessons. Throughout the three weeks, students are responsible for completing that packet, which serves as a guide to creating their own magazine.

In small groups, students decide which culture their magazine should target, and they develop articles, advertisements, and other common magazine components, and compile them into a ten-page (front and back) magazine!

This project is a great way to start off a media literacy class, as it gives students the opportunity to get to know one another while also allowing them to create something completely individualized to suit their own interests. Although the project has some requirements, students have a ton of choice when it comes to who they are targeting and what to include within the pages of their own magazine.

Important topics, such as culture and how the media persuades its viewers, are discussed at length, so students can become as media literate as possible. Additionally, students have the opportunity to strengthen their writing through five different activities, all of which relate directly back to their magazine project.

This is a great project to show at conferences, and students will love looking at each others' products!
