What educators are saying

I used this for a Pi Day rotation with 5th graders. This worksheet was simple enough for them to use and they really enjoyed it.
My students loved this activity. They were engaged and excited to measure the all of the circular objects provided. I had several students new to the country with little to no English language and they were able to participate fully.
Also included in
  1. This bundle contains two guided inquiry lessons to help students discover pi by:measuring circle circumference and diameter, andmeasuring the area of a circle and the area of the square formed by its radius

Description

Have fun finding Pi by measuring the circumference and diameter of circles of all sizes! Students will calculate the ratio of the length of a circle’s diameter to its circumference. They’ll discover that the circumference is always a little more than three times as long as the diameter. This full lesson plan and teacher script will help you lead an inquiry based investigation and class discussion. It’s perfect for an introduction to these geometry concepts, or for a fun Pi Day activity.

A full, free preview is available above to help you decide if this activity will be a good fit for your classroom.

This download is one pdf file that includes:

Standards Addressed:

VA SOL 6.7a, 6.7b (2016 standards): The student will a) derive π (pi); b) solve problems, including practical problems, involving circumference and area of a circle

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.G.B.4 Know the formulas for the area and circumference of a circle and use them to solve problems. (This activity only addresses circumference and diameter.)

TEKS 7.5B Describe π as the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.

A note on grade level: I originally used this lesson with my fifth grade students on Pi Day as a hands-on activity to introduce pi, even though it is not introduced in the standards until 6th grade in Virginia and 7th grade in TEKS and Common Core.
