What educators are saying

We used this resource for Black History Month, we used in addition to a quote by Maya Angelou. They really enjoyed creating this resource and being creative and learning about Black History Month. Thank you!
My kids loved creating a poster for Maya while we were learning about her life and poetry during our poetry unit.

Description

Maya Angelou Collaboration Portrait Poster for Black History Month. These art activities are intended to help you infuse YOUR classroom with art. This poster is designed to complement/supplement any Maya Angelou lesson, Women’s History Month unit, or National Poetry Month celebration.

Poster option #1 of this poster features Maya's poem, "Life Doesn't Frighten Me," and makes a great focal point for your classroom, hallway, or bulletin board displays!

This poster is also part of my famous poets collaborative poster BUNDLE, which includes William Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson, Shel Silverstein, Edgar Allan Poe, May Angelou, and Langston Hughes.

You may also like my Famous Faces of Poetry collaboration poster.

This Maya Angelou collaboration portrait poster is the perfect anticipatory set to pique your students’ interest or a great extension to finish your studies with a WOW. Your students will be talking about this poster for weeks to come and will always remember exactly which piece was “theirs” when they see it on display!

Recommended for any grade as there are 2 poster options available - coloring (for lower grades) and drawing (for older students). Plus, there are a variety of bonus resources included in this product.

This poster is also available as part of my Women's History Collaboration Poster BUNDLE: Volume 2.

Resource Details:

Option #1: Maya Angelou Coloring Collaboration Poster

** GREAT FOR ANY AGE **

This lesson is very easy. Each student is given one section of a large mosaic poster to color according to the instructions on each sheet. Once all sheets are colored and cut out, they are then assembled to reveal a large mosaic/poster/mural of Maya Angelou. You will need crayons, colored pencils, or markers in yellow, purple, and red.

Poster Details

  • There are 30 pieces.
  • Each piece fits on a regular 8.5" x 11" piece of paper.
  • The final poster is approx. 35" x 42" depending on your printer settings.
  • You will need markers, crayons or colored pencils yellow, purple and red.

Option #2: Maya Angelou Drawing Collaboration Poster

** Ideal for middle school and high school students **

This lesson is not hard but is more challenging than the coloring version in lesson #1. In this lesson, each student will draw their own grid piece using a small version of their assigned gridcell as a reference. Once the pieces are drawn and cut out, the classroom poster can be assembled. This lesson engenders a lot of cooperation among students to get all of the drawings within the individual gridcells to line up well and produce a nice looking final poster of Maya Angelou. This is all about working together!

BONUS Activities:

Group collaboration posters are a lot of fun and leave a lasting impression. However, students don’t get to walk away with anything tangible to show their families. I have created a variety of handouts that individual students can work on when they are finished with their poster piece. This is also very useful for early finishers.

The handouts are for a variety of levels, so you can find one that fits your grade level. Included are:

  • Unscramble the portrait drawing.
  • Unscramble the portrait cut and paste (with two grid variations).
  • Maya Angelou coloring page.
